Southern Ontario (Filtered) [Marcus Gwyn-Neumann]

from Mosaic1: Music from the Sonic Arts Studio 2019-2020 by Sonic Arts @ Queen's

about

A performative soundscape composition that draws from a large personal collection of soundscape recordings from Southern Ontario and mixes them on the fly using bandpass filters (filters that allow signal between two specific frequencies to pass, but that discriminate against signals outside of those frequency ranges). Each filter is “assigned” to a specific recording and shifting the frequency range of these filters causes neighbouring filters, along with the recordings they are filtering, to shift as well.

The end result is a live soundscape that seamlessly combines multiple recordings and uses the effects of filtering to mix them in a unique way, all while maintaining a full audible spectrum.

Marcus Gwyn-Neumann is especially interested in sound design for film, television and video games, as well as acoustic and electroacoustic music composition. He will soon graduate from Queen’s University with a degree in Film and Media and will continue working at The Dark Studio, an audio post-production studio in Toronto, while also pursuing his own musical interests.

Recorded live at the Rehearsal Hall of the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts, November 28 2019.
